In 2004, Nigeria witnessed the phenomenal entry of the world renowned game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (WWTBAM), produced by Ultima Limited, trail blazers in the entertainment industry. The show could be tagged “Edutainment” as it not only provided a platform to educate people but was bursting with relishing moments. The show is designed for the whole family and with the encore for more, MTN took over the sponsorship of the show, making it bigger, richer and better by doubling the money tree. The huge success of the show gave birth to the Sunday episodes in 2008, giving MTN a chance to enrich more lives.
WWTBAM has a variety of specials which includes: The Lecturer/Student Special, Valentine Special; where a couple get to play for 10 million naira together, Children’s Special (which started off as the Parent/Children Special) where the child gets to play in the hot-seat for 10 million naira worth of scholarship. Who Deserves To Be A Millionaire? Where celebrities play on behalf of someone or group of people who have contributed in their own way to the positive image of the nation either as athlete, veteran actors, charity homes and the like.
Apart from the hot seat being the major attraction, there are other exciting platforms for various cash prizes or just for fun: Millionaire Home Quiz formerly Home Play, where 15 people win N20,000 weekly, 1 person wins N200,000 weekly and 1 person bags N1 million for the month. Worthy of mention is the audience play where 20 people from the studio audience win N20,000 each.
The online game was introduced in 2008. Although there are no more cash prizes to be won, the game allows you to enjoy the hot seat experience from the comfort of your PC, as well as giving you a chance to get an express entry as a contestant for the show without having to dial 132.
We have had four editions of the Valentine Specials with couples as contestants, one edition of the Parent/Child Special, two editions of Children’s Special, one edition of Celebrity Specials and two fantastic edition of Who Deserves to Be a Millionaire?
There have been over 500 hot seat contestants and over 1,000 Fastest Finger First stage contestants who didn’t make it to the hot seat.
In season 6, Aroma Ufodike won the jackpot of N10 million being the first contestant ever to get the grand prize. Osahon Osazuwa and Babatunde Oni are the only contestants so far to win N5 million in season 5 and 7 respectively.
Contestants from all over Nigeria have graced the show. Although, the contestants tend to be more of male than female, people from different ethnic groups, religious backgrounds, various professions and ages from as young as 18 years to as old as 71 years (except for our specials where there are younger contestants below 18 years) have participated.
